To broaden the vision of the Graduate School’s law students and enhance their understanding of the judicial system of common law, about fifty first year and second year students visited the High Court of Hong Kong on June 20, 2008.

Ms. Qu Sihui, Assistant Information Director of High Court of Hong Kong, gave the students an introduction to the High Court, handed out related material, and made clear the things that should be noticed when showing up in court and auditing the trial. The students were divided into two groups and each group went to a different court.

The students also took the opportunity to visit the Library of High Court and Resource Centre for Unpresented Litigants. In the library, the librarian introduced in detail the library system, book resources and features of the High Court. In the Resource Centre, seeing series of facilities and meticulous services, the students said they felt the care of judicial system in Hong Kong to the ordinary people.

Hu Guoxing, Deputy Director of the Court of Appeal of High Court, spoke to the students about the organisational structure of the High Court, the career as a lawyer in Hong Kong and his personal experience, and the differences in the jury system between Hong Kong and Britain. He also patiently answered the questions asked by students and discussed the different judicial system in Mainland and Hong Kong.

At the end, the students and teachers took pictures in front of the High Court of Hong Kong. Students said they had gained a lot from this experience. It not only opened up their mind, but also deepened their understanding of the judicial system in Hong Kong.
